SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE –

CREATOR OF SHERLOCK HOLMES:

Born on 22 May 1859 in Edinburgh, Scotland, Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a British writer and physician. From 1876 to 1881, Doyle studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh Medical School and practical botany the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh. During his studies he started to write short stories. His first story was published in 1879. After graduating with a Batchelor of Medicine and a Master of Surgery in 1881, he became a ship’s doctor on a Greenland Whaler and then a ship’s surgeon on SS Mayuma, travelling to the West African coast. He completed his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1885. In 1887, he created for his book A Study in Scarlett the fictional characters of the famous detective Sherlock Holmes and his assistant Dr. Watson. In total, he wrote 4 novels and fifty-six short stories, with the Sherlock Holmes stories defining crime fiction. He also wrote fantasy and science fiction stories (Professor Challenger) as well as humourous stories (Brigardier Gerard), various plays, poetry and historical novels. Today, Sherlock Holmes is widely regarded to be the most famous pipe smoker in the world. Doyle was knighted by King Edward VII in the 1902. He died on 7 July 1930 aged 71 from a heart attack. He was orginally laid to rest in Windleham rose garden and later reinterred with his wife Jean in Minstead churchyard in New Forest, Hampshire.

THE LIMITED EDITION SIR ARTUR CONAN DOYLE PIPES:
